I was in the Auckland Art Galery and saw this artwork. A box of 3 x 3 x 2,5 meter you could – first take your shoes off – enter. I looked up and was amazed. I took the picture below. I have of course seen this effect of opposing mirrors before. But this was up. As if I was floating, alone, endless space, amazement. <\/p>\n

When I got out I looked at the description. The artwork was named Environment III (1973) and there was a statement\u00a0by the artist Luc Peire (1916-1994).<\/p>\n

man lives\r\n     standing upright\r\nand for me\r\n     the vertical\r\n     pointing up\r\n     or pointing down\r\nis life\r\n     and has been\r\n     for years\r\nthe voice\r\nthe light\r\nthe shadow\r\n     of my work\r\nas in it I have sought\r\n     for space\r\n     for space quite free\r\nof limits or constraint\r\nthat I attain\r\n     the vertical infinite\r\n     the limitless\r\n     space\r\nlet whom accepts\r\n     my message\r\nsee what I have wrought\r\nenter into it\r\nenvironed by it\r\n     environed within it\r\nmay he be alone\r\n     inside it\r\nwithdrawn from all others\r\n     even from his world\r\nfrom all\r\n     all by my world\r\n     and emptied of all\r\n     save himself\r\n     alone\r\nwithout support\r\n     floating\r\nin endless\r\nfor the endless\r\n     vertical\r\ndenotes endless space\r\nlet him\r\n     then\r\nbe himself\r\nin the world of my creation\r\nan elevation to some\r\n     a chasm in other eyes\r\nbut alone\r\n     in my environment\r\nwhere nothing moves\r\nwhich is neither game\r\n     nor transient spectacle\r\nbut silence\r\nbut contemplation\r\n     of either confrontation\r\n     by it\r\n     or communion\r\nwith the ever-rising\r\n     the luminous hollow\r\n     ascending<\/pre>\n
“the vertical … is life” and ” communion with the ever-rising”. Wow, this really reflects my experience. And it makes you think: how can something so concrete as the vertical ring religious bells?<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
